My Clinical Approach
Neuropsychological Assessments
I completed my clinical training (MA Clinical Neuropsychology) at the University of Cape Town in 2012. This training programme is based on the hypothetico-deductive method of clinical assessment. Therefore, this method is rooted in a focused and personalised approach to people and pathologies and relies on a comprehensive clinical history and careful observation to formulate clinical hypotheses. These hypotheses are tested and, if necessary revised, by administering specific neuropsychological tests relevant to the clinical question. This approach also informs personalised reports and recommendations that are focused, succinct, and relevant to the clinical question.
What to expect
Assessments typically last between 2 and 2.5 hours.
I keep reports as focused as possible and keep the turnaround time as short as possible.
I charge medical aid rates for assessments.
I welcome any relevant additional information like biochemistry and imaging results.
Sleep & Insomnia Assessments
I take a comprehensive approach to assessing individuals presenting with sleep difficulties - there are many (multifactorial) pieces of the puzzle to uncover when trying to understand the nature, cause, and outlook of sleep disorders and insomnia across the lifespan. To this end, I take a detailed clinical history in order to understand each person’s unique circumstances. Since sleep cannot be decoupled from waking experiences, I also collect comprehensive information on day- and night-time symptoms and habits. In addition, I consider both medical and psychosocial factors potentially affecting night-time and daytime experiences. Therefore, I review all medical investigations that have been done (e.g., sleep studies) and consider this along with psychosocial factors into diagnosis and management. Based on the assessment results and the referral request, I can refer the patient back to the referring clinician, make a referral to another specialist if needed, and/or continue working with the patient on a behavioural modification plan to improve their daytime and night-time functioning.
What to expect
I provide sleep and insomnia assessments to patients with and without neurological problems
The initial assessment typically lasts up to 1 hour
If applicable, follow-up consultations (30 - 55 minutes) can be scheduled to work on and monitor behavioural modification plans for improving sleep
Depending on the need, the referring clinician can request a report
I charge medical aid rates for assessments and follow-up consultations
I welcome any relevant additional information like polysomnography, biochemistry, and imaging results
Support for Families & Loved Ones
The families and loved ones of an individual who have been diagnosed with a serious medical condition take considerable emotional, and often physical and financial strain as well. These individuals need to be supported and empowered with accurate and up-to-date knowledge and, consequently, understanding of their loved one’s condition and the practical implications of living with it. This facilitates their own well-being while enhancing their ability to support their family and loved ones. I offer supportive, educational sessions for individuals in need of this type of support.
The initial session lasts up to 1 hour
The sessions are meant to be supportive and educational, they are not traditional therapy sessions - I strongly encourage undergoing therapy alongside these educational sessions
If applicable, follow-up consultations (30 - 55 minutes) can be scheduled
I offer online initial and follow-up consultations on a case-by-case basis, and where appropriate.
